HISTORY

A leader in Adult & Continuing Education since 1954.

The two educators credited for beginning the Adult Education Association of Michigan (AEAM) are Dr. Edgar Harden, Director of Michigan State University Continuing Education Service, and John Holden, adult education specialist on the staff there. After holding exploratory meetings across the state, 90 persons responded to invitations to participate in a “Sponsoring Committee Meeting” in Ann Arbor, to prepare for a Constitutional Assembly.

The Constitutional Assembly on May 7, 1954, surpassed expectations: 220 persons registered representing 85 organizations from 42 communities. Otto Yntema, Director of Off-campus Extension Services for Western Michigan University, was elected president. John Holden was chosen vice-president and succeeded Otto as the second president.

AEAM was visualized to become “an organization of individuals and groups that can work together and do cooperatively what they could not do alone.” Publication of the newsletter Topics was launched immediately and the organization offered outstanding conferences and workshops.

Members

The members of MAACE have come from a wide variety of settings: public school systems, community colleges, four-year colleges and universities, business and industry, agencies, government, religious organizations, libraries, and non-profit, trade and professional associations.

MAACE: It's a New Year and a New Name

MAACE-it’s a new year and a new name,” announced Amanda Gudme, Detroit Public Schools, in her presidential message in the 1983 Membership Directory. When AEA-USA changed its name, the members voted to affiliate with the new national organization.

OPTIONS

“The first issue of OPTIONS (1986 Spring/Summer) is a manifestation of a dream of MAACE Past President Alan Quick,” wrote Beverly Schmoll, who succeeded Alan as president. Two issues are published each year containing thought-provoking articles submitted by members and other adult education professionals as well as abstracts and book reviews.

Professional Development

The jewel of the MAACE crown has been and continues to be the annual conference. In addition, the Board responds to the requests of our members for workshops during the year as part of ongoing professional development.
